Face painters and balloon twisters sure make it look easy and exciting when you watch a professional. An experienced professional quickly slices through their long line of paying customers at busy events. So, it must be profitable, right? And because it looks like it’s easy and so much fun, you can easily imagine the joy you’d bring to events while earning your living.
The question is… how do you get there?… to the point where your painting and twisting skills, your setup and your overall presentation justify a better than “part time hobby income” and your calendar is consistently full?
I’ve went from practicing to professional rather quickly. Most artists with some drawing or building background can develop the skills of a decent face painter or balloon twister pretty quickly. But going from a handful for gigs for your friends and family to full time takes a lot more than just practicing your painting or twisting.
You’ll need a sensible setup that works for you and also looks professional. You need a range of marketing materials including business cards, flyers, and social media presence. Great photos would help a lot – where will you get those from? And the list goes on… The right image and marketing is the difference between a talented singer who works at Walmart and the professional that’s making an album and selling tickets for their first tour.
When you think of it that way, it’s pretty terrifying. But its just true that if you want to be full time self-employed you’re going to spend more hours marketing than painting or twisting.
